General Description: Assists with mechanical maintenance on school buses, school board vehicles and equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Assists with performing assigned duties in the diagnosis and repair of automotive equipment.
- Assists with performing maintenance and repair tasks following manufacturer’s manuals.
- Assists with responds to emergency calls on vehicle failure.
- Assists with the preparation of standard work order on all jobs performed, lists time spent, parts used, and other items are required.
- Assists with inspections of all vehicles not less frequent than once a month, makes necessary repairs, and files a written report on the repairs. Assists with all vehicle inspections according to school board policy and State law and makes necessary repairs with appropriate reports written for each inspection completed.
- Complies with VDOE guidelines.
- Serves as a backup bus driver.
- Observes high standards of safety.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to operate all vehicle types used in the school division.
- Ability to do skilled vehicle mechanical work, on gas and diesel vehicles.
- Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Ability to establish and effectively maintain good working relationship with other employees.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variable in standardized situations.
Education, Training, and Experience Requirement:
- Candidate must possess a high school diploma or GED; or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
License/Certification:
Must possess a valid Virginia driver’s license with school bus and air brake certification.
Physical Attributes/Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands to fingers, handle or feel items, and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to vibrations and moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and outside weather conditions. The noise in the work environment is usually loud. The employee must comply with EPA and OSHA regulations.
