General Description:

Provides necessary assistance and supervision to children on route to or from school or other assigned destinations.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assists bus driver with pre-trip/post – trip inspections.
  • Assists bus driver in maintaining vehicles in a clean and orderly condition and reporting of transportation concerns to supervisory personnel.
  • Observes and demonstrates safety precautions including proper use of safety equipment and accessories with the passengers at all times to protect them from injury.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all information concerning students, staff, and parents.
  • Chooses proper time, place, and supervisor to discuss problems.
  • Keeps children comfortable and supervised during transportation
  • Maintains control and discipline of students at all times.
  • Knows the children by name and is familiar with their individual special needs and/or intervention programs.
  • Knows the proper procedure for emergency evacuation including location and use of emergency equipment.
  • Knows the bus route (in case the regular driver is sick and the substitute driver requires direction).
  • Uses special equipment in relation to student’s special needs, i.e. tie downs, restraints, wheelchairs, wheelchair lifts, etc.
  • Assists the Bus Driver in the loading/unloading of passengers and knows proper child lifting techniques. Knows how to lift a child to prevent injury to employee or child.
  • Other duties and/or job sharing as assigned by Bus Driver and/or administration within employment regulatory guidelines.

  3. Ability to relate to students of varying mental and physical abilities.
  4. Know and apply, as needed, requirements of the Emergency Procedure Manual.
  5. Possess problem solving, imagination, patience, reasoning, creativity, judgment, and analytical abilities.
  6. Possess positive communication skills, both orally and written.
  7. Ability to remain calm and composed in emergency situations.
  8. Ability to determine safe driving conditions during adverse weather.
  9. Know and apply requirements of pupil transportation plans.

Education, Training, and Experience Requirement:

  • High school education or equivalent
  • CPR, seizures and first aid training
  • Handle with Care training
  • Blood-borne pathogens training
  • Autism Training
  • PBIS training
  • Other training required

Physical Attributes/Demands:

Good health with the physical capability of lifting a minimum 50 pounds and carry 100 feet.

Assist students of various mental and physical abilities while in extremes of cold and heat, occasional dusty conditions, ability to tolerate extremes in noise levels, know road traffic-rural and city, and ability to tolerate stressful situations and maintain proper decorum.

Evaluation: 

Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with the school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of classified personnel.
