General Description:
The car driver, under the supervision of the supervisor of transportation, operates an automobile for the purpose of transporting students with special transport requirements. Monitors and assists students with physical and or mental challenges.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Safely operates a County vehicle in a manner that fosters a safe and conscientious image to the public;
- Provides door to door pick-up and delivery of special needs students; physically assists students, during loading and unloading at designated locations, as required to include loading and unloading student equipment.
- Ensures full compliance with safety policies in transporting and handling students;
- Work directly with school staff and parents to develop safe loading/unloading and transport strategies;
- Familiarization with the unique needs of all students in the vehicle and acts as liaison for student with school and parent/guardian;
- Maintains confidentiality of student information;
- Maintains order in the car, specifically student management, by maintaining appropriate level of behavior and control of students while in transport;
- Secures students while ensuring the proper use of car seats and other restraint devices; installs/removes car seats and booster seats as necessary for transportation of students;
- May work with a Transportation Supervisor or designee, if required by student IEP;
- Completes and ensures a timely submission of monthly reports, and other paperwork as required;
- Perform routine operator care to include: pre trip, post trip, washing the car, vacuuming; checking equipment, reporting defects, and presenting the car for regularly scheduled maintenance;
- Attend pre-service, in-service, and other required meetings pertaining to the job;
- Responsible for ensuring all accidents are immediately reported to a driver supervisor;
- Preforms related work as required, or assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Must possess an excellent driving record in compliance with division standards, excellent driving skills, and must successfully complete the school division’s bus driver training course.
- Must possess a good knowledge of procedures and federal/state laws governing the safe operation of a school bus prior to the completion the school division’s training course.
- Must possess knowledge of, or the ability to accurately and quickly learn, Local Street and road system.
- Must possess the ability to recognize and report any unsafe act or condition.
- Must remain in compliance with state/division regulations regarding the use of controlled substances and alcohol as applied to school car drivers.
- Must be capable of working independently and possess the ability to understand and follow through on oral and written instructions.
- Must possess the ability to interact with students, parents, and faculty in a positive and proper manner.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule.
Education, Training, and Experience Requirement:
Candidate must possess a high school diploma or GED; or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
License/Certification:
Candidate must possess a valid Driver's license.
Must possess basic first aid and CPR certification OR must acquire such prior to the completion of the division’s classroom training course.
Physical Attributes/Demands:
Work is typically performed inside and around the exterior of a car. Frequent bending, stooping, crawling and climbing to inspect on and under the hood is necessary. Occasional lifting of at least fifty pounds is required. Occasional operation of vehicles during inclement weather is required. Frequent contact with department staff, school staff, and students is required. Occasional meetings with principals and parents are necessary.
